By analyzing these events, stakeholders can identify critical lessons to enhance preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. Below are case studies of major disasters, their impacts, and the lessons learned.

1. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami
The Indian Ocean tsunami, triggered by a 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, devastated coastal regions across 14 countries, killing over 230,000 people. The absence of an early warning system in the Indian Ocean was a significant factor in the high casualty count. Coastal communities were unprepared, with no established evacuation plans or risk awareness programs. In response, the affected nations, along with international agencies, established a regional tsunami warning system. This disaster underscored the importance of real-time monitoring, public education on natural hazard signs, and international collaboration to reduce risks.

2. Hurricane Katrina (2005)
Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest and costliest hurricanes in U.S. history, causing over 1,800 deaths and $125 billion in damages. The failure of levees protecting New Orleans exposed weaknesses in infrastructure and disaster preparedness. Evacuation plans were inadequate, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations, including low-income and elderly residents. The delayed federal response further compounded the crisis.
