MARKETING 03.

Marketing is not a battle, not a war, or even a contest or cheating.

Marketing is about generously helping others solve their problems and serving them, rather than using coercion or interruption. Unlike traditional media like TV and radio, which were designed to host advertisements, the internet we do marketing now operates differently. It’s a vast but intimate medium, characterized by countless small, personal interactions. Success in internet marketing requires earning attention through genuine engagement, not relying on outdated methods of mass interruption or playing games to cheat and steal from people.

Marketing has changed, but our understanding of what we’re supposed to do next hasn’t kept up. When in doubt, we selfishly shout. When in a corner, we play small ball, stealing from our competition instead of broadening the market.

Shameless marketers, focused on profit through unethical tactics like spamming and coercion, have damaged the profession's reputation, causing ethical marketers to feel ashamed. True marketing, however, is about understanding customers, building trust, exceeding expectations, and contributing positively to culture by creating meaningful connections and seeking willing participants, not victims.
