What the IELTS Speaking Section Assesses

This section assesses how well you can communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences, as well as how you express and justify your opinions.

Timing: 11–14 minutes
Parts: 3
Marking: 4 criteria (Fluency, Lexical, Grammar, Pronunciation)

The 3 Parts of IELTS Speaking

Part 1: Introduction & Interview

4–5 minutes

The examiner introduces him/herself and asks you to introduce yourself and confirm your identity. General questions on familiar topics: home, family, work, studies, interests.

Part 2: Individual Long Turn

3–4 minutes (1 min prep + 1–2 min talk)

You receive a task card with a topic and points to cover. You have 1 minute to prepare and make notes. You then speak for 1–2 minutes. The examiner may ask 1–2 follow-up questions.

Part 3: Two‑way Discussion

4–5 minutes

The examiner asks further questions connected to the Part 2 topic. These questions discuss more abstract issues and ideas, allowing you to analyse, speculate and justify opinions.
