What the IELTS Reading Section Assesses
This section assesses how well you read for general sense, main ideas and details, and whether you understand the author's inferences and opinions.

Academic Reading
For undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional registration
Text Sources
Authentic texts from books, journals, magazines, newspapers – written for a non-specialist audience on academic topics of general interest.
Text Features
Descriptive, factual, discursive, and analytical. May include diagrams, graphs, or illustrations. A simple glossary is provided for technical terms.
Sections
Each section contains one long text. Total text length: 2,150–2,750 words.
General Training Reading
For migration, work, or secondary education
Section 1
Two or three short factual texts (e.g., advertisements, notices). One may be composite (6–8 short texts on a topic).
Section 2
Two short factual texts on work‑related issues: applying for jobs, company policies, pay, conditions, staff development.
Section 3
One longer, more complex text on a topic of general interest from books, magazines, or newspapers.
