What to Expect in IELTS Writing

This section evaluates how well and how accurately you organise your ideas and write a response, along with your ability to use wide-ranging vocabulary and grammar.

Timing: 60 minutes
Tasks: 2 tasks (150 words min for Task 1, 250 words min for Task 2)
Scoring: Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1

Academic Writing & General Training Writing

Academic Writing

For undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional registration

Task 1

Describe, summarise, or explain visual information

You are presented with a graph, table, chart, or diagram. You must describe, summarise, or explain the information in your own words. You may be asked to:

  • Describe and explain data
  • Describe stages of a process
  • Explain how something works or describe an object/event

Style: Academic, semi-formal/neutral

Task 2

Essay writing – point of view, argument, or problem

Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. Topics are of general interest, suitable for university entry or professional registration.

Style: Academic, semi-formal/neutral

Skills assessed

  • Organising, presenting, and comparing data (Task 1)
  • Describing processes or procedures (Task 1)
  • Presenting solutions, justifying opinions, comparing evidence (Task 2)
  • Evaluating and challenging ideas/arguments (Task 2)

General Training Writing

For migration, work, or secondary education

Task 1

Letter writing – request or explanation

You are presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation. The letter may be:

  • Personal (informal)
  • Semi-formal / neutral

Style: Personal to semi-formal

Task 2

Essay – point of view, argument, or problem

Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. The essay can be slightly more personal in style than Academic Writing Task 2.

Style: Slightly personal, still structured

Skills assessed

  • Personal correspondence: providing factual information, expressing needs, likes/dislikes, opinions (Task 1)
  • Outlining problems and presenting solutions (Task 2)
  • Evaluating and challenging ideas (Task 2)
